Risk of online fraud and data breaches during summer sales

The start of the summer sales season historically coincides with an increase in cyber threats aimed at consumers. The annual analysis contained in the Y-Report 2026, edited by Yarix, Var Group’s cybersecurity competence center, highlights how peaks in online purchases are related to the proliferation of fraudulent e-commerce portals, designed to steal payment data. During 2025, over 58,800 credit cards attributable to Italian banking institutions were identified in underground markets and private communication channels.

Fraud methods often exploit the lack of strong authentication systems, such as the 3D Secure protocol, making transactions on portals without advanced protection standards vulnerable. On a global scale, Yarix’s Cyber Threat Intelligence (YCTI) Team detected over 5.5 million compromised credit cards, with a daily average of 15,300. The phenomenon is not limited to the payment card sector: they were identified in the same period over 37,100 IBAN codes globally used for illicit activities, of which 5,483 attributable to Italy, placing the country in second place in Europe for this type of violation.

To mitigate risks, Yarix suggests a rigorous approach to online browsing and purchasingfocused on verifying the digital infrastructures used. The adoption of virtual payment instruments, such as disposable cards, is indicated as one of the most effective strategies for limiting financial exposure in the event of a compromise. Prevention is based on constant control protocols:

Reliability check: make purchases exclusively on the sites and apps of well-known retailers, consulting review platforms to monitor their reputation.

Domain analysis: make sure that the web address corresponds exactly to the official one of the brand, paying attention to any typosquatting attempts.

Connection security: always check the presence of the HTTPS protocol (indicated by the padlock in the browser) and the transparency of company information, including physical addresses and return policies.

Management of offers: be wary of excessively low prices on trendy products, with discounts that exceed market averages by 30-40%.

Data confidentiality: never provide sensitive information or banking credentials in response to unexpected contacts via email, SMS or telephone, even if they come from parties claiming to be reliable entities.
