Arrest warrants have been issued for nearly 1,000 people in Turkey on charges of having ties to Gulen

A decade after the failed coup in Turkey in 2016, law enforcement today issued arrest warrants for nearly 1,000 people on charges of having ties to Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara considers the main culprit of what happened.

After the bloody events of 2016, prosecutors indicted US-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen, a former ally of President Recep Erdogan who died far from his homeland two years ago.

Announcing a “major purge” today, Turkey’s justice and interior ministers claimed police were looking for “968 suspects” to root out elements linked to Gulen.

Analysts note that the failed coup attempt was a turning point in the history of modern Turkey, allowing Erdogan to consolidate his power.
