Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will host the 2028 Women’s Volleyball European Championship

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will host the 2028 European Women’s Volleyball Championship after being chosen by the European Confederation as one of the venues for one of the groups in the final phase of the competition, as reported this Thursday by the RFEVB.

The organization indicated that the CEV had praised “the quality of the candidacy presented by the RFEVB and the local administrations”, which was promoted by the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, and which had the support of the Higher Sports Council (CSD) and the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE).

A project that has been “solid, innovative and sustainable” and that “will turn the Gran Canaria town into the epicenter of continental volleyball.” “First of all, I want to thank the CEV and its Board of Directors for the trust placed in our candidacy. I am proud of the work and cooperation carried out between the RFEVB, the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Cabildo de Gran Canaria to be the venue for the European Championship,” remarked the president of the RFEVB, Felipe Pascual.

For the leader, organizing the European Championship is “a challenge and a historic moment.” “We have not hosted a major tournament in our sport for more than two decades, and hosting Eurovolley is an exciting project in which the RFEVB will reflect the line of growth and development in which we are working,” he stressed.

Now, the designation of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will allow one of the groups of the first phase to live in the national territory in the Insular Sports Center, which is currently in the rehabilitation process.

The 2028 European Championship will repeat the competition format of this year’s, with 24 participating teams divided into four groups of six teams, in which the Spanish team, as host, will be seeded in its group. Each of these four groups will be played in a different venue and country.

“Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, one of the towns with the greatest presence of our sport, will throw itself into an event that will be quite a spectacle on and off the court. This will be the first time that Spain organizes an Absolute European Championship, both in the men’s and women’s categories, in which it will also be the first major volleyball event in our country since the Final Phase of the 2003 World League held in Madrid,” celebrated the RFEVB.
