Israelis will be fined for car repairs in the Palestinian Authority

The Israeli Ministry of Justice has published new instructions aimed at combating vehicle theft into the Palestinian Authority.

According to the current “Law on the Restriction and Registration of Transactions of Used Auto Parts”, repairing an Israeli car in the Palestinian Authority entails up to 3 years in prison.

However, between 2015 and 2023, only 328 cases were opened for violating this law, of which only 14 reached the filing of an indictment. In other cases, the case was limited to removing a car from the road.

When checking the verdicts, it turned out that in seven cases a fine of between 4,000 and 10,000 shekels was imposed, in three cases a sentence of community service was imposed, in one case an obligation was given to refrain from committing an offense for a year, and one indictment was withdrawn.

In light of these data, new instructions from the Ministry of Justice establish that from now on, within the framework of the law, an Israeli who transfers his car to the territory of the autonomy for repairs will be fined 3,000 shekels. If we are talking about an Israeli who uses the services of a courier, that is, someone else who transports the car on site, the fine will be doubled, that is, 6,000 shekels, in order to deter both participants in the transfer of the car from violating it.

In addition, for each used part found in an Israeli workshop that is not properly registered, a fine of NIS 3,000 will be imposed. The maximum fine will be 30 thousand shekels.

To enter into force, the instructions must be approved by the Knesset Economic Committee.
