Delmastro’s chat postponed the vote in the Chamber. The Council reviews the documents.

The Chamber of Deputies’ vote on the Rome Prosecutor’s Office’s request to access chats between former Justice Undersecretary Andrea Delmastro and restaurateur Mauro Caroccia, who was definitively convicted of fictitious ownership of assets, aggravated by the crime of facilitating a mafia organization (the Senese Camorra clan), has been postponed.

And the case has returned to the attention of the Authorizations Committee, after Chief Prosecutor Lo Voi wrote to President Lorenzo Fontana. In the letter, several parliamentary sources report, Lo Voi emphasizes the need to verify the exact correspondence of the chat messages requested with the complete documentation produced by the defense. This is said to be the crux of the new request made by the Rome Prosecutor’s Office. Essentially, Lo Voi believes it is necessary to be able to verify the seized assets and the defense’s documentation.

According to the opposition, President Fontana himself announced the postponement of the vote in the Chamber, scheduled for today, and the return of the matter to the Cabinet.

The clash between the majority and the opposition

And it was immediately a clash: in the Chamber, the opposition insisted on the need for the Chamber to express its opinion before the summer recess, pressing the center-right: “What are you afraid of?” The majority, opposed to the return to the Cabinet (“an anomalous procedure, it sets a precedent,” insists Forza Italia group leader Enrico Costa), stood firm and rejected the accusations.

The position of the Brothers of Italy

The Brothers of Italy (FdI) is not hiding, Sara Kelany responds forcefully, and “hopes that the issue can be discussed in the Chamber within the next week.” The climate is heating up, with the Democratic Party urging the majority to change its stance and authorize the Prosecutor’s Office to use chats, contrary to the provisions of the Council’s report (approved by the body by a majority vote, with the opposition voting against), which was supposed to be approved by the Chamber today.

Dori’s Decision

Tensions between the two sides escalate further after Council President Devis Dori orders all members of the body to be able to view the documentation sent to Montecitorio by Lo Voi. “I have a duty, as president, to protect the right of all Council members to have a complete picture,” Dori explains.

Center-Right Objections

The center-right is not having it and is taking the matter to President Fontana, complaining that it has created “a precedent” and demanding that he summon Dori to reconsider his decision. This initiative is described as “ill-advised and outside of any institutional logic, a forced move that undermines the impartial role of the Council,” the party explains.

The Committee’s Next Steps

Barring any surprises and any interventions by the President of the Chamber, starting tomorrow morning, the chats will be available to members of the Authorization Committee, which will meet again early next week to decide whether to proceed with an additional investigation or return directly to the Chamber and vote on the report already approved by the Committee, which denies the Prosecutor’s Office access to the correspondence between Delmastro and Caroccia.

“I have forwarded the correspondence relating to the chats at the center of recent controversy to the Chief Prosecutor, Dr. Francesco Lo Voi, via certified email, as I have nothing to hide,” announces Andrea Delmastro. “I hope that the unacceptable manipulation by a certain political faction will now cease,” the FdI MP continues, “which has attempted to stir up trouble and has only thrown mud, even though I am not even under investigation.”
