Actress Nastassja Kinski and Wim Wenders have ended the dispute over a nude scene in the film “False Movement”. “Wim Wenders has apologized to Nastassja Kinski and complied with her wish to cut the scene she objected to from the film,” says a joint statement from the two, which was published on the Wenders Foundation website.
Both are united by the wish that the memory of the film will no longer be overshadowed by this conflict in the future, as well as by their long friendly relationship will be restored.
Kinski was seen shirtless in a scene in the 1975 film when he was 13 years old and said he had been asking the 80-year-old for years to remove the approximately two-minute-long scene. A man slaps her and then caresses her face. Kinski is only wearing underwear in this scene. The now 65-year-old had also hired a lawyer who had announced formal legal steps against Wenders.
Wenders apologized
The “False Movement” had already been withdrawn at the beginning of June. The foundation said at the time that streaming, TV and distribution partners would no longer make the film publicly available. Wenders also apologized. “As the only person responsible for the ‘False Movement’ who is still there, I see that Nastassja Kinski should have been better protected back then. I apologize for that, Nastassja, without any ifs or buts.”
Wenders said in May at the German Film Prize that he would “never do the scene like that again today”. But he couldn’t blame his younger self at the time. He made a film in his time. But the question arises for filmmakers as to how to deal with film heritage.
