Two people were found dead inside a burnt apartment block in Thusis, eastern Switzerland, while several others were missingaccording to what the Canton of Grisons police announced in a statement, specifying that the identification of the two victims is still pending. The fire broke out during the night between Thursday and Friday in a building that houses a restaurant and residential apartments.
Police yesterday said five people were missing after the fire, which broke out shortly after midnight, had “completely burned” the building. “The stairwell collapsed, so the roof of the building was opened with a crane,” authorities explained in that statement. Fourteen people managed to escape the burning building, eight of whom were injured, including two in serious condition.
A photo released by police showed a multi-storey apartment building engulfed in smoke, with flames shooting out of several upper-floor windows and into the night sky, igniting the roof. Police today said several emergency services and specialists involved in the investigation into the cause of the fire remained at the scene. “The building is still at risk of collapse, which is hampering investigations and recovery efforts,” the statement said.
