Before US Open: Lys about farewell to Hamburg: professionalism not present

Eva Lys also justified her move from Hamburg to Monaco with what she sees as the inadequate training conditions in the Hanseatic city. “I was a top 40 player who had no idea where she could train in Hamburg,” said the 24-year-old before the start of the US Open in New York. “The professionalism in the area just isn’t there for the level.”

Lys, who was born in Kiev and grew up in Hamburg, moved to Monaco around two months ago. There she could train with numerous top players such as the Ukrainian Marta Kostjuk and the Italian Jasmine Paolini. In addition, the conditions are tailored to the needs of professionals, she reported.

Weather in Monaco better for rheumatism

In Hamburg, on the other hand, there is “simply no good tennis center,” complained Lys. “I always had the huge problem that I could never easily get places. I never consistently had a gym that was suitable for professionals. There are only small gyms with equipment, but they are very old.”

Another factor in moving to the Principality was the better weather, which had positive effects on her autoimmune rheumatic disease. “Waking up with sun is different for my body,” Lys said. “My biggest problem with my rheumatism is my morning stiffness.”

Her hometown wants the world number 98. but don’t turn your back completely. “I love this city, it will always be my home,” said Lys. “But the weather was always catastrophic for my rheumatism.”

At the last Grand Slam tournament of the year she will face Czech qualifier Gabriela Knutson in the first round.
