San Giovanni Suergiu (Italian) – Burned out and completely smashed, a red Ferrari lies on the side of the road on the Italian island of Sardinia. Right behind it you can see a crashed Lamborghini and other luxury cars. A couple (63, 67) from Switzerland died in the rubble. It’s the fatal end to an exclusive journey in a sports car!
According to the Italian agency Agenzia Italia, all occupants of the luxury cars took part in the multi-day “Sardinia Supercar Experience” event. Over six days, the participants drive across the island in Ferraris and Lamborghinis, visit viewpoints and stay overnight in expensive hotels. If vacationers travel in their own car, the trip costs 11,999 euros. A multi-day trip in a rental Ferrari SF90 from the organizer can be booked for 24,800 euros.
The tourists started in the town of Teulada on Monday morning. The next stop was to be on the coast of Iglesias, where the rally participants planned to have a lunch break together in Masua. Afterwards we should go to accommodation in Mores for the night.
At 10:30 a.m. the red rental Ferrari drove with the Swiss near the town of San Giovanni Suergiu in front of an Indian couple in a borrowed Lamborghini (Huracan Spider) in the PS fan column. When the Ferrari attempted to overtake, a fatal collision occurred on a straight stretch.
The red sports car crashed head-on into a camper in the opposite lane in which a South Tyrolean couple (60, 61) was sitting. The motorhome tipped over and remained on its side. The occupants were not seriously injured in the collision.
According to the Italian news agency Ansa, the Ferrari overturned after the collision. Then it hurled off the road and caught fire. The couple died in the flames.
The blue Lamborghini also left the road and the Indian couple were not seriously injured either. A fourth vehicle, a van, was also involved in the accident.
After the accident, State Road 195 was closed in both directions and a rescue helicopter was on duty alongside the fire department. The participants in the luxury car rally stood on the asphalt in shock. It was not known whether they would continue the journey.
