Earthquake today in Peru, tsunami warning after shock 7.2

A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.2 was recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGC) off the southern coast of Peru, at a depth of 28 kilometers. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PWTC) issued a warning for a “possible” tsunami with waves that could reach one to three meters along some coasts of Peru.

“Based on all available data, dangerous tsunami waves are expected on some coastlines,” the center said. The PWTC said there was no tsunami risk for the West Coast of the United States.

The earthquake occurred eight kilometers west of Atiquipa, about 600 kilometers south of the capital Lima. The Peruvian presidency stated on X that the government is monitoring the situation and assessing any damage.
