Start summer sales with discounts of up to 50 percent: “A good start is crucial”

About one in five traders will start the summer sales with discounts of 50 percent. This is evident from a survey of 463 traders by NSZ. According to the business organization, the weather conditions will be decisive. “The weather will be more decisive than ever. A good start will be crucial.”

The summer sales start on Monday 1 July. The NSZ survey shows that 21 percent of traders plan to give discounts of 50 percent immediately. Most traders (31 percent) will stick to the usual discounts of around 30 percent.

“The starting discounts can be somewhat higher for larger chains. But the first week will be crucial for small traders: if sales are disappointing there, for example due to bad weather, we expect higher discounts quickly,” says the NSZ.

Weather

According to the NSZ, the weather will “play the role of executioner more than ever”. “Ninety percent of traders indicate that the bad weather of the past few weeks has had a major impact. Consumers have stayed home in recent weeks and traders expect that consumers will want to strike during the sales period”, says Cedric Tack, spokesperson for NSZ. (Continue reading below the photo)

Also striking: almost half of the traders surveyed (42 percent) advocate a shift of the sales period from July to August. “We are going to approach the competent minister to further analyze and investigate this,” says Tack.
