Five injured in stabbing on bus in western Germany

Five people have been injured, three of them in critical condition, in a multiple stabbing attack on a bus in the western German city of Siegen on Friday, according to police, who have no evidence that it was a terrorist attack.

Police have arrested the alleged attacker, a 32-year-old woman, but no further details have been released. The bus, which was carrying around 40 people, was heading to a festival in Siegen, a city located around 75 kilometres from Cologne.

The attack came a week after another stabbing that left three people dead and eight injured in the town of Soligen. The terrorist group Islamic State claimed responsibility for the incident, and a Syrian citizen who was subject to an expulsion order was arrested.

The attack has revived the debate in Germany on immigration and also on guns. This week, the government announced tighter restrictions on carrying knives on public transport and total restrictions on sporting events and festivals.
