Baliga has been called the man with the largest negative carbon footprint in the world. Thanks to his invention, humanity needs to generate less electricity. It means significantly lower emissions.
Thanks to the awarded technology, it has been possible to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 82 gigatons in the last 30 years, the justification for the award says. The amount corresponds to the carbon dioxide produced by mankind over an average of three years.
Baligan developed by the power semiconductor is known by the abbreviation IGBT, which comes from the words Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor.
Baliga developed the IGBT technology in the 1980s. It has been the world’s most important power semiconductor component. IGBT has improved the efficiency of electrical equipment and reduced the cost of production.
Wind and solar energy plants use technology to convert the generated electricity into a form suitable for consumers and industry. It is a key technology in electric and hybrid cars and in electric motors used by consumers and industry in general.
“The IGBT has been for the last 40 years, and still is, the most important semiconductor component in power electronics,” says the Chairman of the Millennium Prize Committee, Prof. Päivi Törmä in the bulletin.
Born in India, Baliga works as a professor of energy at North Carolina State University in the United States.
A million The Millennium Technology Award, worth EUR, is awarded every other year. The award is now 20 years old.
