Finland It is one of the countries coldest on the planetwhere temperatures are often below zero degrees Celsius in winter. But with the help of technology, it can cope with this situation, especially with its new heat pump being built in its capital Helsinki.
This is the largest heat pump in the world, with the capacity to heat more than 30,000 homes using an air-water system. But the interesting thing is that this revolutionary machine promises to protect the environment.
The technology comes from the company MAN Energy Solutions, and includes two 50 MW electric boilers and the reduction of CO2 emissions by a total of 56,000 tonnes.
Another surprising aspect is that the unit can operate in outdoor temperatures down to -20°C, the company notes, using CO2 as a natural refrigerant in a closed-loop system.
This is part of the technological principle used by MAN: it uses electrical energy to raise low-temperature thermal energy to a higher, usable level. The result is a supply of 200 GWh. In addition, it makes it possible to supply heat at temperatures of up to 90 °C.
The plant will be operated by energy company Helen Oy, which aims to make the Finnish capital a carbon-neutral city by 2030. The plant is expected to start producing during the 2026-2027 heating season.
