Cannes Award-Winning Transgender Actress Karla Sofia Gascón Files Sexist Complaint Against Marion Maréchal

A new complaint against Marion Maréchal. The Spanish transgender actress awarded at the Cannes Film Festival Karla Sofia Gascón filed a complaint on Wednesday for “sexist outrage” after a tweet from the head of the European candidate list for Reconquête!, AFP learned from her lawyer.

This complaint, addressed to the Paris prosecutor’s office, comes two days after the one filed by six LGBT+ rights associations for “transphobic insult” and targeting the same remarks. On Tuesday, Marion Maréchal had denounced this first complaint, affirming “to remain on the side of truth, of reality and of the refusal of the erasure of women” on her X account (ex-Twitter).

Karla Sofia Gascón, 52, received a joint Best Actress award on Saturday at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, along with Americans Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana, and Mexican Adriana Paz, for the film “Emilia Perez” by director Jacques Audiard.

In response, Marion Maréchal wrote on Sunday on X: “So it is a man who receives the prize for best actress in Cannes. Progress for the left is the erasure of women and mothers.”

“We must put an end to this kind of talk,” reacted Karla Sofia Gascón, quoted in a statement from her lawyer sent to AFP. The complaint against X was filed for “sexist outrage because of her gender identity.”

According to Me Étienne Deshoulières, the actress’s lawyer, “only the person targeted by the comments can act on this basis.”

“It was therefore necessary for Karla Sofia Gascón to act alongside LGBT+ associations to have Marion Maréchal convicted of sexist outrage based on gender identity,” he added in the press release.

A historic prize in Cannes

In the film “Emilia Perez,” Karla Sofía Gascón plays a ruthless Mexican drug lord who decides to transition and become a woman.

The first transgender woman to receive this award at Cannes, she dedicated it to “all trans people who suffer.”

In 2023, 2,870 crimes or offences (assaults, threats, harassment, etc.) against lesbians, gays, bi and trans people were recorded, a jump of 19% compared to 2022, according to a study by the statistical service of the Ministry of the Interior published in mid-May.
