Latino GDP in the United States exceeds that of France or India: study

New York., The gross domestic product (GDP) generated by Latinos in the United States reached almost 3.7 trillion dollars in 2022, above economies such as the United Kingdom, France or India, according to a study by two California universities published yesterday.

If Latinos living in the United States were an independent country, their GDP would be the fifth largest in the world, ahead, for the third consecutive year, of the United Kingdom, France and India, according to this annual report prepared by the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at UCLA and the Center for Economic Research and Forecasting at California Lutheran University.

Outside of the world’s largest economy, only China, Japan and Germany have a GDP higher than that of the Latin countries of the United States.

Published in the midst of the electoral campaign for the November presidential elections, in which migration is one of the most divisive issues, the study reflects that this community, which represents only 19.2 percent of the US population – some 65 million people – accounts for 41.4 percent of the growth of the real GDP since 2019.

The data highlights that Latinos are an important source of resilience for the U.S. economy as a wholesaid David Hayes-Bautista, co-author of the report, professor of Medicine and Public Health at UCLA and director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture, in a statement.

Latinos will continue having a significant impact on the growth of the US economy in the coming decadespredicts the researcher, who highlights the population increase of this community, its youth (30.7 years on average compared to 41.1 for the country as a whole) and its strong participation in the economically active population.

Between 2010 and 2022, the number of Latinos with college degrees increased by 113.5 percent and their salaries grew by 3.4 percent annually compared to 1.4 percent for the rest of the population, according to the seventh edition of the study.
