Social network X has once again made its platform inaccessible to its users in Brazil. In doing so, Elon Musk’s company is complying with a ruling by the Brazilian Supreme Court, which imposed a fine of 5 million réais (equivalent to 820,000 euros) per day if X does not respect the block imposed last month.
Some of the approximately 22 million Brazilian X users were able to use the app via their mobile phones again on Wednesday. On Thursday, just before 4 p.m., X stopped using the software from cybersecurity company Cloudflare. That software allowed X to bypass the blockade.
The communication network update that made X accessible again on Wednesday was intentional, according to the Supreme Court, while the company claims it was accidental and temporary. The judge ruled that X “demonstrated recalcitrance, illegality, persistence and intent to disregard the court orders”.
Brazil’s Supreme Court banned the use of X in Brazil in late August after American billionaire Elon Musk, who owns X, ignored a series of legal measures aimed at combating disinformation via X.
