Messaging service X is trying to continue its operations in Brazil

Message service X appears to be bowing to demands from Brazil’s Supreme Court to continue operating in the country.

Judge of the Supreme Court of Brazil Alexander de Moraes ordered to be closed by X at the end of August, because the owner of the messaging service, a billionaire Elon Musk had not appointed a legal representative for the service in Brazil.

Now the news agency Reuters reports that X’s lawyers have assured the service that it intends to comply with the court’s requirements in order to allow it to continue operating in Brazil.

The highest the decision to close the court was influenced by last year’s far-right attack on Brazilian government buildings. Messages containing hate speech that spread from X’s far-right accounts seemed to act as triggers for the attack.

Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered the accounts to be removed after the attacks. In response, X closed its office in Brazil in mid-August and dismissed the staff who worked there.

In Brazil, the law requires that foreign companies must have a legal representative in the country. After X closed its office, it naturally no longer had such a representative. So Judge de Moraes finally ordered the entire service to be shut down.

De Moraes’ decision angered thousands of Brazilians to express one’s opinion In São Paulo for freedom of speech and against censorship. The Ministry of the Interior estimates the number of participants at 45,000.

Reuters according to X’s lawyers said late on Friday that the service had once again appointed a legal representative in Brazil.

On Saturday, de Moraes gave X five days to submit to the Supreme Court the commercial registers and other documents proving that X had officially appointed Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao as its legal representative in Brazil.
