La Poste: contact points in the countryside escape budget cuts

At least three years suspended. The State will ultimately maintain its share of 50 million euros in the territorial postal presence contract for the year 2024 and the following two years, which was threatened with being cut, the newspaper Le Monde said on Friday, citing a source at breast of Matignon. At the end of September, the CEO of the La Poste group, Philippe Wahl, said that this contract would be cut by 50 million out of 160 million this year, suggesting a similar cut in 2025.

“Prime Minister Michel Barnier actually said that he was sensitive to the presence of public services as close as possible to citizens. The continuity of La Poste’s territorial planning mission will therefore be ensured and what is necessary will be done in the finance bill during the parliamentary discussion,” was declared in “the entourage” from the head of government, quoted by Le Monde on its website.

97% of the population within 5 km of a postal “contact point”

Questioned by AFP, a spokesperson for La Poste indicated that the group had been “informed of the tabling of an amendment” to this effect in the draft budget for 2025.

Signed by La Poste, the Association of Mayors of France (AMF) and the State for the period 2023-2025, this territorial postal presence contract compensates for the financial losses linked to the presence of 17,000 postal “contact points” (post offices, municipal and intermunicipal agencies, France Services, etc.) throughout the territory. Thanks to this network, more than 97% of the population is located less than 5 km or less than 20 minutes from a postal “contact point”.
