Aspo’s subsidiary is building four cargo ships – the total value is around 186 million euros

Subsidiary group of the conglomerate Aspo ESL Shipping will build four fossil-free cargo ships, the total value of which is around 186 million euros, Aspo informs.

The investment will be implemented during the years 2024–2028. ESL Shipping has the option to expand the order with several ships.

The manufacturer of the new ships is China Merchants Jinling Shipyard and they are built in Nanjing, China. The ships are designed by a Finnish ship designer Deltamarin and with the Swedish SSPA model test facility.

ESL Shipping has been involved in the design of the vessels to ensure that the vessels are tailored to meet the needs of local customers.

The ships will start operating in the third quarter of 2027. The fourth ship in the series will be commissioned in the first quarter of 2028, the release says.

According to Aspo, new ships can be used completely fossil-free by using hydrogen-based e-fuel, i.e. e-methanol.

ESL Shipping’s goal is to be at the forefront of supporting its industrial partners in the delivery of completely fossil-free products and services”, CEO of Aspo Rolf Jansson commented in the announcement.
