The fault of Olkiluoto’s triple unit has been fixed – electricity production decreased for a few hours

Olkiluoton On Wednesday, there was an accident in unit three of the nuclear power plant that lasted for a few hours interferencesaid Teollisuuden Voima (TVO).

The event had no effect on nuclear safety, but the electricity production of the triple reactor was reduced to a lower than normal level, around 440 megawatts.

TVO said after the evening news that the cause of the disturbance had been determined and the problem fixed. After the repair, a power increase and return to normal production began in the plant unit.

The disturbance started in the afternoon. One of the reactor’s 89 control rods was driven into the reactor after its drive mechanism failed.

Normally, the driving mechanism keeps the control rods outside the reactor, and the safety automation drops the control rods into the reactor in the event of a malfunction. The function of the control rods is to adjust the power of the reactor and, if necessary, stop it.
