Supreme Court of Brazil allows X again after weeks of blockade

Brazil’s highest court has lifted the ban on social media platform At the end of August, Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court forced X to cease operations because the company had not appointed a legal representative in the South American country. X also did not comply with court orders to delete accounts of users who allegedly spread fake news or hateful messages.

The issue degenerated into a battle between X owner Elon Musk and Chief Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Musk called the judge an “evil dictator.” He dismissed the call to delete users’ accounts as an attempt at censorship.

De Moraes now orders Brazil’s national telecom agency to make X accessible again in the company’s largest Latin American market, the Supreme Court reports on its site. In it, the court emphasizes that X must follow decisions of Brazilian judges in order to remain active in the country, “with respect for national sovereignty”.
