Eggs from “the most environmentally conscious chicken farm in the world” are now also for sale in Belgium

Eggs from the “most environmentally conscious chicken farm in the world” can now also be purchased in Belgian Lidl stores. The supermarket chain reported this on Friday.

Kipster prides itself on the fact that its chickens lay climate-neutral eggs, with respect for the animal, nature and people. The chickens roam freely indoors and outdoors, while consuming residual flows from the food industry. There are no so-called day-old roosters. These are male chicks that are ground or gassed immediately after they hatch, because they do not yield anything in the laying hen industry.

In the European Union, approximately 350 million roosters die this way every year. The Kipster roosters, on the other hand, move to an organic farm, where they are raised for meat. Furthermore, the farms run entirely on self-generated solar energy. The eggs are also no more expensive than the organic eggs available at Lidl. The egg cartons are completely biodegradable and can be disposed of as organic waste, Lidl Belgium points out.

To demonstrate that they operate transparently, live cameras have been installed at Kipster farms in the Netherlands and the United States, which can be followed via the website.

However, we will not soon see chickens free-range on Belgian soil. Over the past five years, Kipster and Lidl Belgium tried to set up a Kipster farm in Belgium, but that was not successful. “Despite the fact that the Kipster concept responds to the government’s request for increasingly sustainable agriculture, it has not managed to gain a foothold in our country,” says Isabelle Colbrandt, spokesperson for Lidl Belgium. “Because we want to introduce Belgian consumers to Kipster’s climate-neutral eggs, we are now offering them from the Netherlands. In this way, we hope to help set the egg production market in Belgium in motion and redesign it sustainably.”
