About 50,000 people voted for their favorite design for a newly painted aircraft from Brussels Airlines. The five most popular designs are: Lucky Luke, the Atomium, cycling, poppies (referring to Flanders Fields, ed.) and the shrimp fishermen from the Belgian coast.
A jury will now choose a winner from the top 5. On November 5, it will be announced which of the five designs will become the next ‘Belgian Icon’, Brussels Airlines announced on Tuesday.
“The design competition for the next Belgian Icon is clearly alive,” the airline said on Tuesday. Brussels Airlines currently has three ‘Belgian Icons’ in its fleet: the Tintin aircraft ‘Rackham’, the Tomorrowland aircraft ‘Amare’ and ‘Trident’, the official aircraft of the Red Devils and the Red Flames. Previous theme planes (which no longer fly) were decorated with Magritte, the Smurfs and Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
This year’s jury includes singer Sandra Kim, musician Alex Callier of Hooverphonic, cartoonist Philippe Geluck and Michèle George, who won two gold medals during the Paralympic Games. The aircraft will be presented to the general public in the spring of 2025.
