The European Commission announced on Thursday that it will open an investigation into a Chinese discount online shopping company Temun of the activity.
The commission intends to investigate whether the company has possibly violated EU digital legislation related to the sale of illegal products and the addictive design of the service, such as game-like rewards.
Temu’s systems, which the company uses to recommend purchases to users, are also among the reasons for the commission. In addition, the commission intends to find out whether Temu complies with the obligation of the digital services act to give researchers access to the company’s publicly available information.
Based on the EU’s digital services regulation, Temu is classified as a very large online platform. The company announced in September that it has 92 million monthly users in the EU. Due to its size, Temu must comply with the strictest obligations of the EU digital service regulation.
If the commission considers that Temu has violated the EU’s digital services regulation, it can impose substantial fines on the company.
