Finland: The tobacco tax increases started

There will be six increases in total. The price of a pack of ten will rise to a generous 13 euros in just over 2.5 years.

In the government program the decided tobacco tax increases started today, Friday. In total, the tobacco tax will be increased in six stages, and the total increase is an average of 27.1 percent.

New increases are coming every six months, so that the last one will be made in July 2027.

The tax increases apply to cigarettes, rolled tobacco, pipe and cigarette tobacco, as well as cigars and cigarillos. E-liquids and nicotine pouches are excluded from these tax increases.

Today, the price of a pack of cigarettes, which costs about ten euros, will rise to about 13.2 euros, when all the increases have been made.

The goal of the government program is that the tobacco tax increases would raise about 100 million euros into the state coffers. In addition, during the spring budget debate, it was decided to increase the tobacco tax by an additional 50 million euros.

Tobacco companies usually introduce a large number of tobacco products to the market before tax increases take effect. For this reason, the increases are reflected in the prices of the products only when the old stocks have been sold.
