One of the main aspects of the US election campaign is the ability of candidates to raise funds. We are talking about hundreds of millions of dollars. No one prohibits candidates from spending their own money, but funds usually come from sponsors and donors.
According to Deutsche Welle, Kamala Harris’ campaign has raised $906 million through September 30, 2024. Another 359 million was collected by lobbying groups supporting her candidacy. 56% of the amounts came from large sponsors, 44% were mobilized through donations not exceeding $200.
Donald Trump’s campaign has raised $367 million, about 40% of what Harris has raised. However, pro-Trump political action committees gave the presidential candidate another $573 million. Billionaire Timothy Mellon allocated $150 million, and Elon Musk – $120 million.
Since the beginning of October, Harris has mobilized $92 million, and Trump – only 16 million. At the same time, the US Federal Election Commission notes that Harris’ campaign headquarters has $118 million left in its accounts, and Trump’s – $36 million.
It is worth noting that in the previous two elections, Democratic candidates mobilized larger sums than Trump. However, the Republican candidate in 2016 defeated Hillary Clinton, who was considered the favorite in the election race. Trump lost to current President Joe Biden in 2020.
