Seven families sued Tiktok in France

Seven family in France has sued the social media platform Tiktok, news agencies say Bloomberg and Reuters.

Families are trying to hold Chinese-owned Tiktok responsible for the suicide of two teenage children. Families also accuse Tiktok of harming their children’s mental health.

A lawyer representing families Laure Boutron-Marmion tells Bloomberg that “French judges should recognize Tiktok’s responsibility in the case”. According to Boutron-Marmion, the moderation of the platform is not capable of adequately addressing content harmful to children’s mental health.

In a lawsuit brought by French families, Tiktok is accused of subjecting a total of seven children to content dealing with eating disorders, suicide and self-harm.

Tiktok was also sued in October in thirteen states in the United States. It is accused in the states of, among other things, spreading information that falsifies the safety of the platform.

Tiktok representatives refused to comment on the lawsuit filed in France to both Bloomberg and Reuters.

Protection police in Finland warned at the beginning of this year from using Tiktok. According to Supo, there is a possibility that the information of the users of the platform will be leaked to the Chinese security authorities.
