PTY’s statistics were published: This is how large the share of mild wines in the value of alcohol sales is now

Strong ones beers and mild wines have been available in grocery stores since the beginning of June. However, based on recent statistics, their turnover does not seem impossibly large.

However, the percentages in the statistics published by Päivättätavarakauppa PTY can be a bit dizzying and confusing.

For example, in the grape wine product group, sales increased by 125 percent from the previous quarter in July–September and by 636 percent from the corresponding quarter a year ago. The grape wines product group includes the eight percent wines that came to stores in June.

“In percentage terms, the growth seems large, because a year ago eight percent wines were not yet on sale. Previously, the product group contained wines with a maximum strength of 5.5 percent,” says PTY’s CEO Tuula Loikkanen.

During the period, the share of grape wines was four percent. Lagers and beers, on the other hand, made up 64 percent of the value of all alcohol sales.

“There doesn’t seem to have been such a rush to the wine shelves of grocery stores that was painted before the summer and before the change in the alcohol law,” says Loikkanen.

At the same time, however, he points out that the perception of Finns’ alcohol consumption after the law change will become more precise, since Valvira, the central administrative agency of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, will publish data on liter consumption.

“PTY’s statistics talk about euros, we don’t know about liters. I would still dare to predict that the total consumption of alcohol has not grown worse with the reform.”

Low alcohol or the share of non-alcoholic beer and beer-based drinks in the value of all alcohol sales was six percent in July–September.

In this product group, sales seem to have really increased. Compared to the quarter a year ago, sales increased by almost 27 percent in July–September.

According to PTY’s statistics, the value of alcohol sales increased by almost two percent from a year ago in July–September. The sales of alcoholic beverages accounted for 503 million euros, or 8.7 percent, of all grocery sales.

From June since then, the alcohol shelves in grocery stores have in any case grown in size, as the selection has been supplemented with strong beers and mild wines.

Is it possible that the selections will start to shrink again before long, if the sales of 5.5-8% alcoholic beverages made by fermentation do not increase from the current level?

“Yes, the store basically sells what consumers are interested in. If it happens that a product does not sell properly, the store rarely forcibly keeps such a product on the shelf,” says Laukkanen.
