The Oxxo store chain, a subsidiary of the Femsa conglomerate, has employed 3,500 refugees and migrants in Mexico over the last five years, highlighted Femsa’s director of corporate affairs, Roberto Campa Cifrián, in a meeting in which he highlighted his commitment to the employability of these groups.
During his speech at the International Migration Film Festival, the executive recalled that it was in 2019 when the company launched a program in Monterrey with the aim of employing refugees and migrants, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration.
Now in 2024, he specified, what is sought is to extend the program to other Latin American countries.
For migrants to truly integrate into countries, it is crucial to provide them with decent and formal employment opportunities that allow them to generate income and fully participate in local systems and markets.
Campa explained.
He explained that in addition to promoting the employability of migrants and refugees, it is about demonstrating that some ideas around the issue generate barriers for these groups, since in the case of Mexico there has been no documented impact on the work of nationals, despite the increase in up to 200 percent in the migratory wave.
For this reason, Campa stressed, We remain convinced that our work as companies is to continue promoting the development of all people and communities, of the societies in which we live.
