Fund investments by Finns rose to an all-time high

During September, households made net new investments of EUR 190 million in Finnish investment funds, the Bank of Finland says in its press release. At the same time, the number of redemptions made by households was lower than the number of subscriptions.

Households made the most new investments in fixed income and equity funds, both for almost 85 million euros. On the other hand, most of the subscriptions made by households to fixed-income funds were directed to short-term interest funds.

On the other hand, over the last year and a half, Finnish households have made more redemptions than subscriptions from real estate funds. However, in September there were also few redemptions from real estate funds on a net basis.

The new ones in addition to investments, the value of domestic fund holdings rose by more than 300 million euros in September. The value of holdings increased the most in equity and bond funds.

In addition to domestic funds, Finnish households invested EUR 80 million in foreign investment funds during September.

In September, households’ mutual fund holdings from foreign investment funds reached more than eight billion euros, compared to 5.9 billion euros in the corresponding period a year ago.

Bank of Finland according to the monthly investment volume of Finnish households has been positive since the beginning of 2023.

Statistics Finland, on the other hand, said earlier in the fall that owning investment funds is increasingly common in Finland.

According to Statistics Finland, at the end of last year, 35.4 percent of Finns owned investment funds, stock exchange shares or both. Ten years ago, the number was smaller. At that time, around 25 percent of Finns owned investment funds, stock exchange shares or both.

Specialist researcher at Statistics Finland Brother-Matti Törmälehto estimated in the bulletin published in September that the increase in investment options and the general situation of the stock market has affected the popularity of investing in Finland.
