Shipping company CMA-CGM (France) is promoting a project to deploy electric barges on inland waterways in Vietnam.
The information was stated by Mr. Mathieu Friedberg, Senior Vice President of CMA-CGM Shipping and Logistics Group when meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha, on November 19.
The project aims to combine and effectively exploit multimodal transportation including sea, inland waterway, road, and railway in the group’s operations in Vietnam. Currently, CMA-CGM operates 4 shipping lines, operating at 6 international seaports, with 15 routes to Europe, the US and a number of service routes connecting ports.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha affirmed that Vietnam encourages the use of vehicles using renewable energy in transportation, contributing to green energy conversion and reducing gas emissions.
According to him, the Government has issued mechanisms for direct electricity trading and investment in installing self-produced and self-consumed rooftop solar power. These are favorable conditions for CMA-CGM to implement the electric barge project, as well as invest in infrastructure and a synchronous charging station system.
In addition, the group can also access financial resources according to commitments from the Government and international financial institutions within the framework of the Fair Energy Transition Agreement, when investing in energy conversion projects, Green transportation in Vietnam in the future.
The Deputy Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Transport to coordinate with CMA-CGM to review and evaluate the potential and needs of inland waterways across the country. The two sides also need to test operate electric barges to complete safety regulations and standards, as well as regulations on electricity supply infrastructure from renewable energy sources.
In addition to the projects being promoted, he asked CMA-CGM to prioritize new solutions on green ports, smart ports, synchronous investment in renewable energy supply infrastructure, and artificial intelligence (AI) applications. , automation in Vietnam.
