He menu price of the day In Spain there has been an increase 6,1% compared to 2023, standing at an average price of 14 euros (while for the same period last year it was 13.20 euros). An increase that occurs above the annual rate of change of the Consumer Price Index (IPC), which has been 1,5%, and the food and beverage price index, 1.8%.
The increase in the average price has also occurred in the 67% of the 800 establishments interviewed by the employers Hospitality of Spain together with the company Edenred for its study on the evolution of the price of the daily menu in 2024. More specifically, the 12,5% of the premises has made a price increase of between 11% and 20%, which is the largest variation recorded in the report.
However, this increase in costs has not occurred with the same intensity throughout the country, but varies depending on the community: while the further increases of prices have occurred in the Valencian Communitywith a 32,5% (up to 15.10 euros) and Asturias with a 27,5% (standing at 13 euros), in regions such as Murcia has only changed one 4,6% (the average price is 13.07 euros per menu).
The rise in prices has been experienced even in Canary Islandswhich despite being the community with the lowest price (12.70 euros), has suffered a change in 12,4% in their prices.
On the podium variation of prices by citiesthe survey highlights the increase in the cost of 30,3% of the price of the menu of the day in Bilbao (15.50 euros per menu), followed by 27% experienced in Málaga (14.10 euros) and 26,1% in Zaragoza (14,50 euros).
However, if we only pay attention to the pricesthe most expensive city continues to be the Basque, followed by Barcelona (15.10 euros on average) and Madrid (14.80 euros). On the opposite side, the cheapest cities to use this resource are The Palms (13 euros), Valencia (13 euros) and Sevilla (13,30 euros).
The Secretary General of Hospitality of Spain, Emilio Gallego, highlighted during the presentation of the report that this consumer option enjoys national demand “very current“, although stressed by the cost increases experienced by the sector.
Businessmen regret the loss of profitability
The Spanish Hospitality employers’ association points to its own survey carried out by Sigma Dos to emphasize the vision of businessmen: 42,3% claims to have suffered a loss of profitability, despite the fact that the aforementioned increase in prices exceeds the evolution of the CPI.
When pointing out the main causes for this decline, the 35,3% of the owners points to the food and supply expenseswhile the 31,8% of the owners holds the salary costs.
In line with this last labor aspect, the report highlights how in these months of 2024 labor costs for the Restoration branch have experienced an increase of 12,4% in the first semester.
