Knesset members, with 28 votes, no abstentions and no votes against, approved in the final reading a bill to encourage food donations by MKs Inon Azulaya (Shas) and Yasmin Friedman (Yesh Atid).
According to the new law, public organizations that provide, independently or through an external supplier, food for their visitors in the amount of 500 portions per day or more will be required to enter into an agreement with the structure involved in the distribution of food within the framework of charity, and transfer unused portions to them.
Organizations will be able to refuse to enter into such an agreement only for justified reasons.
The law will apply to all ministries and departments, with the exception of departments subordinate to the Ministry of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Defense, as well as to the Knesset, municipalities, state-owned companies and their subsidiaries, municipal companies, other government institutions such as the Bank of Israel, National Insurance Office, etc.
