Five states represent 40% of the national economy

The country’s capital and the states of Mexico, Nuevo León, Jalisco and Guanajuato contributed almost two-fifths of the Mexican economy in 2023, a year in which the southeast continued with greater dynamism, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). .

According to the autonomous body, the national gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023 at market price was 31 trillion 855 billion pesos.

Of that amount, Mexico City contributed 14.8 percent, while the state of Mexico contributed 9.1 percent, so that both states are responsible for almost a quarter of the economy’s progress.

The Inegi indicated that in 2023 the national GDP observed a variation of 3.3 percent in real terms, compared to that reported in 2022.

In the same period, 30 entities registered increases in their GDP, while Coahuila and Tamaulipas had a negative variation of 0.7 and 0.1 percent, respectively.

The report on the gross domestic product by federal entity (GDP) for 2023 indicates that the states with the most growth were Quintana Roo, with a rate of 13.2 percent; San Luis Potosí, with 8; Oaxaca, with 7.6; Campeche, with 7.5; Aguascalientes, with 6.2; Yucatán, with 5.4; Sonora, with 4.7, and Mexico City, with 4.3 percent.

The above shows that most of the southeastern entities continued with greater economic dynamism, in particular Oaxaca and Quintana Roo, but Tabasco and Chiapas did not repeat the progress of 2022.

The Inegi indicated that the gross added value (GVA), that is, the characteristics added during the production process of a product or service, which increase the valuation of primary activities (agriculture, livestock, fishing and hunting) totaled one billion 222 billion current pesos.

Of that amount, Jalisco contributed 14.2 percent. Michoacán followed, with 10.5; Chihuahua and Veracruz, with 6.9 each entity; Sonora, with 6.5; Sinaloa, with 6.2, and Guanajuato, with 5.6 percent.

The GVA of secondary activities, which make up mining, manufacturing industries, construction and generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy and supply of gas through pipelines to the final consumer, registered an amount of 10 trillion 347 billion current pesos.

The entities that contributed the most to this amount were Nuevo León, with 9.8 percent; the state of Mexico, with 7.7; Jalisco, with 6.5; Coahuila, with 6; Baja California, with 5.5; Chihuahua, with 5.3, and Guanajuato, with 5.1 percent.

The GVA of tertiary activities, that is, services and commerce, was 18 trillion 368 billion current pesos.

Of this total, Mexico City contributed 21.4 percent; the state of Mexico, 10.2; Jalisco, 7.5; Nuevo León, 7.1; Veracruz, 4.4, and Guanajuato, 3.9 percent.
