Despite Trump’s threats, Mexico will attract almost 40 billion dollars in FDI

Despite the threat of the next president of the United States, Donald Trump, to impose 25 percent tariffs on Mexican exports, Mexico would be receiving almost 40 billion dollars in foreign direct investment (FDI) for next year, the Business Council estimated Mexican Foreign Trade, Investment and Technology (Comce).

“Regardless of government policies, businessmen and industrialists use other strategies. Mexico, today in North America, is the country that could most easily – with the openness we have – have integration regarding foreign direct investment,” said Sergio Contreras Pérez, executive president of the business sector organization.

Comce explained that the country can not only take advantage of the relationship it maintains with the United States and Canada, but also the relocation of companies, since this phenomenon implies less logistics costs.

Susana Duque Roquero, general director of Comce, mentioned that by 2025, Mexico is expected to attract 39,324 million dollars in foreign investment due to the growth trend of the export industry and the deep integration achieved in value chains, particularly manufacturing.

He commented that in the first nine months of 2024, the country raised 35,737 million dollars, an amount that translated into a growth of 8.54 percent compared to the same period in 2023, a figure that occurs after 2023 closed with a historic figure of 36 billion dollars
