World’s highest solar power plant completed in Tibet

The Power Construction Corporation of China, PowerChina for short, together with the also state-owned China Huadian Corporation in Tibet highest solar power plant in the world completed. 170,000 photovoltaic panels were installed in an area near the city of Shannan between 5,046 and 5,228 meters above sea level installed, as Electrek reports.

Solar power plant with 80 megawatt hour battery

The total installed peak power of the Caipeng Solarkraftwerks lies by 150 Megawatt. A huge battery storage unit with a capacity of 80 megawatt hours constructed. The main purpose of the storage is to cushion load peaks in the network that occur in winter and spring in Tibet.

Beat schedule by 42 days

The entire facility was built in two construction phases. The first 50 megawatts went into operation at the end of 2023. The second construction phase only began in August 2024. Within only 115 days were the remaining 100 megawatts Solar modules and the entire storage system were installed. The schedule was beaten by 42 days, reports PV Magazine. There is no information about the construction costs.

By far not the biggest project

The highest solar farm in the world to date was also in Tibet, at 4,700 meters above sea level. Although the Caipeng project is the highest PV system in China, it is not one of them largest in the country. A project in Proving Xinjiang takes top spot 5 gigawatts installed power.
