The Israel Police press service reported that the Inspector General of Police, Lieutenant General Dani Levy, held intensive negotiations on Tuesday, December 24, with the chief auditor of the Ministry of Finance and with the person responsible for salaries of civil servants.
The purpose of the negotiations was to resolve the issue of additional one-time payments to police officers for the events of October 7, 2023 and the first months of the Iron Swords War, similar to those that the IDF made for regular military personnel.
According to Levy, the leadership of the Ministry of Finance decided to go into conflict and disrupt the negotiations, “causing serious harm to the employees and soldiers of the Israeli police” and continuing to “play political games at their expense.”
Let us recall that earlier this week it became known that the leadership of the police and prison service, with the knowledge of the Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, unilaterally decided to make payments totaling 240 million shekels, without informing the Ministry of Finance about this and without indicating the source of funds. The Ministry of Finance blocked this step.
In recent weeks, a conflict has emerged between Ben-Gvir, who is demanding an increase in his ministry’s budget by 20 billion shekels, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. Part of this conflict is the decision of the Otzma Yehudit party to block the approval of the state budget.
