Mexico imposes a 36.23% tariff on welding from Vietnam

The Ministry of Economy (SE) imposed a compensatory quota (tariffs that are applied to imports that harm national production) of 36.23 percent on imports of microwelding wire originating in Vietnam, regardless of the country from which it comes.

In it Official Gazette of the Federation, The agency explained that, after an investigation that began in October 2023, it was determined that there were dumping (unfair practice that consists of selling below the normal price to eliminate competition) in the trade of these products.

This tax, detailed in the decree that comes into force this Tuesday, will be for products that enter Mexico through tariff items 7229.20.01, 7229.90.99, 8311.10.99, 8311.30.01 and 8311.90.01 of the TIGIE. , or by any other.

The product under investigation is microwelding wire, which is a solid carbon steel wire alloyed with manganese and silicon, in diameters from 0.6 to 1.6 millimeters, coated or not with copper, which is melted to join two or more pieces. of steel by means of the generation of an electric arc; It is also known as MIG (metal inert gas), roll welding, wire welding or wire electrode, the SE detailed.

The investigation, the agency noted, was carried out to analyze the possible damage caused from February 1, 2020 to January 31, 2023. The resolution, it added, was based on information provided by importers, exporters and national producers.

After determining the damage to the national industry, the SE added in a statement, the establishment of a definitive compensatory quota of 36.23 percent on imports of microwire from Vietnam, which will be in force for the next five years and could be extended.

He clarified that importers who prove that their merchandise is from a country of origin other than Vietnam will be exempt from the quota.
