President Stubb comments on cable damage: NATO has been asked to increase its presence in the Baltic Sea

NATO has been asked for more presence in the Baltic Sea, the President of the Republic Alexander Stubb said at the media conference organized in the Presidential Palace on Friday. Stubb commented on cable damage in the Baltic Sea at the event.

Stubb told the media conference that Finland has agreed with Estonia and communicated with the Secretary General of NATO Mark Ruttelle from the desire to increase NATO’s presence in the immediate area, especially around critical infrastructure.

According to Stubb, cable damage has been dealt with in an additional tp-utva. He also said that various ministries have been requested to prepare an overall overview of how Finland can react in similar situations in the future.

Stubb emphasized at the press conference that Finland has the ability to respond to situations such as disturbances caused by cable damage.

“The situation is under control. We have nothing to worry about,” Stubb said.

Disturbances were observed on Christmas Day

A malfunction was detected in the EstLink 2 electricity cable between Finland and Estonia on Christmas Day.

On Christmas day, there was information about the disruption of three telecommunication connections. On the morning of Boxing Day, there was information about the disruption of the fourth connection. Three cables lead from Finland to Estonia and one from Finland to Germany.

The authorities already organized a press conference on Boxing Day about the outrageous vandalism that took place. Also the Prime Minister Petteri Orpolla (kok) was a press conference as usual.

Officials said the power cable was damaged by an Eagle S oil tanker whose anchors were not in place. The Finnish police and border guard took over the tanker.

According to the customs, the oil tanker belongs to the Russian shadow fleet and involves the evasion of sanctions.
