Microsoft is allocating $80 billion this year to expand data centers. This is necessary to enable the enormous computing power required for AI applications. Brad Smith, the chairman of the American technology giant, announced this.
More than half of the investment is made in the United States. “This reflects our commitment to this country and our confidence in the American economy,” the CEO said in a blog post. Smith therefore called on the new American President Donald Trump to support the sector and, above all, not to hinder it with “heavy regulations” regarding AI.
Microsoft’s financial year runs until June 2025. In the previous fiscal year, ending in June 2024, Microsoft already spent more than $50 billion on this.
The major cloud infrastructure providers such as Microsoft and Amazon have been in something of a race lately to expand their computing capacity by building new data centers.
