Bratislava. The Slovak government will discuss retaliatory measures against Ukraine after it interrupted the flow of Russian gas through its territory to Slovakia, Prime Minister Robert Fico said yesterday. In a video message, he assured that his party, Smer, would consider the possibility of cutting off electricity supplies to Ukraine, reducing aid to refugees in that country and demanding the resumption of gas transit or compensation for losses that, according to Slovakia has suffered from the end of that flow. Exports of the Russian resource via Soviet-era gas pipelines through Ukraine were halted on New Year’s Day, marking the end of decades of Moscow’s dominance over European energy markets, as a transit contract between Russia and Ukraine expired. Fico ended military aid to kyiv and has sought warmer relations with Moscow.
