Finland’s nuclear power plants published last year’s production data – Olkiluoto fell short of its record

Last year’s production of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant in 1970 would have been enough for the electricity consumption of the whole of Finland.

The summary is made by artificial intelligence and checked by a human.

The Olkiluoto nuclear power plant produced 23.26 terawatt hours of electricity in 2024.

Olkiluoto’s electricity production covered about 30 percent of Finland’s electricity consumption.

The Loviisa nuclear power plant produced 7.9 terawatt hours of electricity in 2024.

Loviisa’s electricity production covered about 10 percent of Finland’s electricity consumption.

Olkiluoton the nuclear power plant produced 23.26 terawatt hours of electricity last year. The amount was about 30 percent of Finland’s electricity consumption, informs Teollisuuden Voima (TVO).

TVO emphasizes that it is an estimate. The exact numbers will be published later.

Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant produced 7.9 terawatt hours of electricity last year. The share was about 10 percent of the electricity consumed in Finland, says Fortum in its press release. The reading corresponds to almost the entire electricity consumption of the capital region.

One terawatt hour is one billion kilowatt hours.

TVO: n according to Olkiluoto’s last year’s production in 1970 would have been enough for the electricity consumption of the whole of Finland. At that time, it was just under 21 terawatt hours.

However, Olkiluoto fell short of its production record in production figures. TVO explains this with the prolongation of the annual maintenance and the generator failure detected in the second unit.

Of the three units, the newest of Olkiluoto’s plant units, Olkiluoto 3, produced the most electricity for the national grid. Its electricity production last year was 9.69 terawatt hours.

Olkiluoto 1 produced 6.95 terawatt hours of electricity and Olkiluoto 2 produced 6.62 terawatt hours of electricity.

Olkiluoto 3 was out of production for more than four days last year, in addition to the annual maintenance performed in the spring.

“The only unplanned production interruptions at the OL3 plant unit were caused by a failure of the differential pressure measurement in June and a malfunction of the generator seal oil system in November,” says TVO.

TVO also characterizes Olkiluoto 1’s production year as strong. According to TVO, the unit’s availability factor was 89.2 percent. The unit was out of production only for annual maintenance.

The production of Olkiluoto 2 was limited by a generator failure detected in September. The unit’s availability factor was lower than in previous years and was 84.9 percent.

Loviisa the utilization factor of the power plant was 88.3 percent last year. The utilization factor of the first unit was 86.6 percent and of the second unit 90 percent, says Fortum.

The power plant’s production was reduced by the unplanned four-day production outage of Loviisa 2 in November, in addition to annual maintenance that took longer than planned.
