The decline was expected, it is now official. According to a decree published this Saturday, a 14% reduction in the regulated tariff for individuals is expected for February 1, 2025. The tariff shield on electricity will however end on this date, but without the tax increase once envisaged by the government.
The decree stipulates that the tax (excise) will mechanically rise on February 1 to its pre-crisis level, adjusted for inflation, i.e. 33.70 euros per megawatt hour for individuals compared to 22 currently, but without any additional increase.
“The tax increases provided for in the initial finance bill do not come into force” and “the reduction in electricity prices should be, as announced by the Prime Minister on November 28, 14%.” in 2025,” detailed the entourage of the Minister of Industry, Marc Ferracci, contacted by AFP.
A drop in prices on the international market
Enough to allow the regulated price to reflect the drop in international market prices. As early as the summer, EDF announced that it expected a lasting drop in prices, in particular thanks to the recovery in nuclear and hydraulic production.
When he was Prime Minister, Michel Barnier had for a time considered raising taxation to a level higher than that which prevailed before the tariff shield against inflation, to raise 3.4 billion euros, which would have had the consequence to limit the reduction in household bills to 9%. The former government finally gave up, faced with pressure from the National Rally, LFI and LR – which did not prevent it from being censored before the budget was voted on.
