The Olkiluoto nuclear power plants grind 30% of Finland’s electricity – A comparison with 1970 shows a big change

The Olkiluoto nuclear power plant produced a total of 23.26 terawatt hours, or one billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2024. The figure is about 30 percent of the electricity consumption of the whole of Finland.

The production of the Olkiluoto nuclear reactors in 2024 would have been enough for all of Finland’s electricity consumption in 1970. At that time, Finland’s electricity consumption was just under 21 TWh. Now the reading is at the level of 80 TWh.

In 2024, Olkiluoto 3 produced 9.69 TWh of electricity. Its annual maintenance was done in the spring, and in addition, OL3 was out of production for 108 hours, or a good four days, during the entire year.

OL1 produced electricity 6.95 TWh and OL2 6.62 TWh.

The availability factor of the Olkiluoto 1 plant unit was 89.2 percent. In September, the production of Olkiluoto 2 was limited by a generator failure. The plant unit’s availability factor was 84.9 percent.

The generator rotor replacement work took 28 days. After this, the production of the plant unit has been continued at a lower power level of 735 MW in order to reduce the risk of rotor failure.

“Last year’s positive thing was the good reliability of OL3. It was only the plant’s second year of operation, so the number of production interruptions was low, even in international comparison,” he says TVO: n production manager Marjo Mustonen in the company’s announcement.

10 percent from Loviisa

In 2024, a total of 7.9 TWh of electricity was produced at Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant.

The electricity production of the Loviisa power plant accounts for approximately 10 percent of the electricity consumed in Finland.

The utilization factor of the Loviisa power plant was 88.3 in 2024. The utilization factor of Loviisa 1 was 86.6 percent, the utilization factor of Loviisa 2 was 90.0 percent, according to Fortum’s press release.

In addition to annual maintenance that lasted longer than planned, production was reduced by Loviisa 2’s unplanned four-day production stoppage in November.

The first unit underwent an extensive four-year maintenance last summer, and the second unit underwent a short annual maintenance.
