Authorities reported on Thursday that three communication cables between Estonia and Finland have also been damaged. Two of them are from the telecom operator Elisa and one from the Chinese Citic Telecom. In addition, one Cinia connection between Finland and Germany has been damaged.

“The damage to the cables has no effect on our consumer customers or our business customers, at least at the moment. On the other hand, there may be effects on other telecom operators using cable for direct connections if they have not certified their connections,” says the security director of the telecom operator Elisa Jaakko Wallenius.

Elisa estimated on Thursday that it will take a few weeks at most to repair the communication cables.

Traficom CEO Jarkko Saarimäki told a press conference on Thursday that a ship will leave Finland to repair Elisa’s cables. Cinia’s cable is on its way to repair the cable vessel from France.

Prime minister Petteri Orpo (kok) said at his own press conference that the damage will not damage Finland’s energy supply or communications. According to him, Estonia will probably suffer more damage.
