No federal subsidies more or less 18 billion pesos annually (…) there are not enough conditions to stabilize the price of tortillaswarned Homero López García, president of the National Tortilla Council (CNT).

In a message spread over the weekend on his social media accounts, the leader asked for dialogue with the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to find options, almost three weeks after he withdrew from the working tables of the National Agreement for the Corn and Tortilla.

By doing an extensive analysis of production costs and everything we normally have to deal with, we have come to the conclusion that there are no conditions to stabilize the price of tortillas without support or a subsidy from the federal government.said.

He commented that producers face increases every year, because there are inputs that are priced at international prices.

Applying a subsidy to the price of tortillas would be equivalent to more or less 18 billion pesos annually, which I consider not possible.

Between 35% and 40% of stores, at risk

The leader recalled that on December 12 the council left the dialogue with the federal government due to not finding favorable conditions. We cannot allow damage to part of the entire production chain, neither to the corn producers, nor to the dough and tortilla industry.indicated López García.

There must be a table of analysis and dialogue, but also very firm actions. In this sense, he requested conversations with President Sheinbaum Pardo, with the head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Julio Berdegué; with Iván Escalante, head of the Federal Consumer Prosecutor’s Office, and with the Ministry of Economy.

He insisted that forcing price stability could lead to the closure of between 35 and 40 percent of the dough and tortilla vendors. and the saddest thing is that they would be the people who normally fulfill all their obligations to the State.
