Tomorrowland appeals fine for plastic cups (Boom)

The Tomorrowland music festival will contest the fine and ‘deprivation of assets’ it received from the Department of the Environment, the organization announced on Friday evening. This involved a total sum of 727,000 euros.

Tomorrowland is appealing because it believes “that the requested deviation has been wrongly refused. We are convinced that our arguments are well-founded, but were not assessed in an objective manner,” it said. The organization points out that “an independent study agency has shown that banning the stock of recyclable cups does not produce any demonstrable environmental benefit. Moreover, at the time we applied for the derogation, there was no market available that could guarantee a reliable and reliable supply of reusable cups and associated services.” Tomorrowland says that this position has also been confirmed by the competent minister, who stated in parliament that such capacity is now available.

Tomorrowland also finds the imposed deprivation of benefits of 700,000 euros “disproportionate”. That amount is determined on the basis of a calculation that nullifies the financial benefit of not applying the legislation, in order to create a level playing field between the festivals.

Tomorrowland received the sanction – split into a fine and a deprivation of assets – last month because it did not work with reusable cups last summer, as required by law. The festival said it wanted to use up the existing stock of disposable cups first and stated that there were practical problems with the reusable cups. This year the festival will switch completely.
