American technology giant Apple disabled one of its new AI applications on Thursday. The function allows summaries of current events to be obtained. However, the application led to errors and a complaint from the BBC.
Apple started deploying its generative artificial intelligence system, “Apple Intelligence,” this winter, two years after OpenAI released such technology with ChatGPT. One of the new features summarizes notifications from news applications for users of recent Apple devices, such as the iPhone 16.
After an update on Thursday, this application is temporarily unavailable. After improvements, the function would be reintroduced.
In December, the feature revealed that the BBC News website had published an article stating that Luigi Mangione, suspected of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had committed suicide. That report was erroneous and the BBC had never written it.
Since the success of ChatGPT, Google, Microsoft, Meta and other tech companies have entered a race to deploy generative AI. The models become more impressive, but they also make mistakes. For example, one of the versions of Google’s model last year had advised internet users to use glue in pizzas.
