Just as Tiktok went offline in the US: Instagram announces a new video editing app, X also comes with an update

According to the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, the app called Edits is more than a video editing application. It is “a complete package of creative tools,” he reports in a message on Instagram. This will create a tab where users can find inspiration for editing their videos. Drafts for edited videos can also be shared with fellow users of the app.

Instagram seems to be presenting itself as an alternative to Tiktok. The app of social media group Meta, which also includes Facebook, also increased its advertisements in Apple’s App Store this weekend. People who searched for “Tiktok” were greeted with a promotion for Instagram.

X also announced an update. That platform comes with a tab where users of the platform can watch videos. X calls it “an immersive new video environment rolling out to users in the United States starting today.”

Tiktok was unavailable to its 170 million US users for almost a day on Sunday after a law went into effect banning the app’s continuation. Tiktok is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. The US fears that Americans’ data is being misused by Chinese officials.

Tiktok’s website in the US was back online for a number of American users later on Sunday. The social media platform said it will work with incoming President Donald Trump, who will be inaugurated on Monday, on a long-term solution to keep the app in the US. Trump had said on Sunday that he will restore access to the app in the US once he returns to power on Monday.
